The Veterans War Memorial of Texas History Wiki

This wiki space is meant to be used to develop educational materials that will be placed within the Veteran's War Memorial of Texas complex and/or on the website at http://www.mcallen.net/veterans/default.aspx. The goal is to have the information and educational materials developed available to share with others in our community.

The information and educational materials will be developed through a partnership with local teachers, educational service centers, UTPA faculty and students, along with others interested in sharing the history of this Nation. Please request access to this wiki if you would like to participate.

Background

Veterans visiting various schools on Veterans Day found that most children did not understand the meaning of Veterans Day.  Neither did they have a concept of the numbers of men and women that have been killed or declared missing in action in the wars and conflicts of this nation.  History books, school curriculum, and families had not adequately covered these events.

These children may one day be called upon to defend their country in the U.S. Armed Forces without knowing the terrible consequences of war.  Their leaders will not remember these wars and conflicts for they too, may have never been taught the cost in lives and sacrifices that helped build this nation.

Need

A need exists for an educational and historical memorial.  A memorial that will honor the 1.3 million men and women killed or missing in action in all of the wars and conflicts of this nation and provide an educational and historical setting so that schools, teachers, students and families may visit and learn of the struggles that made this nation a powerful and compelling beacon of hope to the world.  It will be a visible reminder of the sacrifices of their deaths.

We need to pass this vital information and facts to future generations in the hopes that they will be able to understand the terrible consequences of war and possibly prevent the series of events that lead to war as they become the leaders of tomorrow.
